What are the requirements for license renewal in the state that I live in?

Requirements for license renewal are not the same for every state. If your license has been inactive for 5 years or more visit The Department of Health website for your state requirements. You may qualify to just take the state exam again to reinstate your license. If you never had a license but still have your transcript showing you completed the required hours from your state you may still qualify to take or retake the exam as long as your hours have not expired. Check with your state department of health to verify.

If I have been licensed for over 5-20 years but my license is still active do I need to refresh in the curriculum in order to take the exam?

If your license is still active some state do require continuing education to keep your skills current. Retaking the state board exam is an option only if your license becomes inactive and need to be reinstated.

I have completed all the hours needed to take the exam, what should I do next?

If you completed all the required hours contact your state health department of licensing to verify your eligibility to take the exam especially if it’s been over 2-20 years.

I have already taken the exam several times and did not pass what should I do to help me figure out what I am doing wrong?

How much is it to take the state board exam? How many questions should I expect on the state board test? Do you have a practice exam that I can take?

The cost of the state board exam depends on your state and can range from $55.00 $180.00 dollars with both practical and written. Written only exams may cost less.
There are usually 100-110 questions on the cosmetology state board exam. The first 10 questions are practice.

A practice exam is a requirement for taking my course. It helps me to determine how much you remember and what subjects you need to focus on the most.

I have been out of the field for a couple of years should I just take the exam or take some refresher courses first?

If you’ve been out of the field for a couple of years it’s always good to take a refresher course to build your confidence before taking the exam. Studying alone can become overwhelming and frustrating if you don’t know where to begin.
